Pope Francis honored St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr, on the feast day after Christmas, highlighting ongoing persecution of Christians. At St. Peter's Square, Francis spoke of modern martyrs, including French monk Christian de Chergé, killed by Islamists in 1996. He also visited a Rome prison, opening a Holy Door for the Jubilee Year and celebrating Mass, urging hope and openness.
