Maine high schools form co-op swim teams to combat a 48% decline in swimmers since 2014-15.

Swimmers in Maine high schools have declined significantly, from 1,808 in 2014-15 to 936 this year, due to the closure of youth swim programs at YMCAs and the impact of the pandemic. To combat this, schools are forming co-operative teams, pooling resources to form competitive teams. This strategy has grown from three co-ops in 2018-19 to ten this year, involving 26 teams, and even larger schools are merging programs.
