U.S. to build first new heavy icebreaker in over 50 years, enhancing Arctic capabilities.
The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy have been approved to build the first Polar Security Cutter, a heavy icebreaker, at Bollinger Mississippi Shipbuilding in Pascagoula.
This marks the first such vessel built in the U.S. in over five decades.
Capable of housing 186 personnel for 90 days, it can break ice up to eight feet thick.
The cutter is designed with reinforced hulls and angled bows for open-water icebreaking, enhancing the Coast Guard's fleet which currently consists of one heavy and one medium icebreaker.
