Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport, spanning U.S.-Canada border, closes Dec. 26 due to low usage, high costs.

The Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport, known for its runway straddling the U.S.-Canada border, will close on December 26 after 70 years of operation. The Minnesota Department of Transportation cited low usage and high maintenance costs for the closure, as the international agreement needed to operate the airport will not be renewed. Located near Roseau, Minnesota, and Piney, Manitoba, the airport was popular among Americans traveling to Canada for hunting and fishing. Staff at the airport were allowed to cross borders without typical customs procedures.
