To prevent the spread of invasive pests that can damage local ecosystems, the U.S. National Parks Service advises getting firewood within 10 miles of its destination. States have laws against moving untreated wood more than 50 miles or across state lines unless it's heat-treated. The Don't Move Firewood campaign suggests buying local firewood and checking for local restrictions before outdoor fires.
