Japan bans production and trade of fluorescent lamps by 2027 to reduce mercury pollution.
Japan's cabinet approved a ban on the production, import, and export of all general lighting fluorescent lamps by the end of 2027, following an international agreement to curb mercury pollution. The ban will be phased in, starting with incandescent fluorescent lamps in January 2026, compact fluorescent lamps in January 2027, and other types in January 2028. Major manufacturers like Panasonic will stop production by September 2027.
