India ends 'no-detention' policy, allowing students in grades 5 and 8 to be held back if they fail exams.
The Indian government has ended the 'no-detention policy' for students in classes 5 and 8 in schools it oversees, allowing those who fail year-end exams to be held back.
This change follows a 2019 amendment to the Right to Education Act and has been adopted by at least 16 states and two Union Territories.
Students who fail can receive extra instruction and a re-examination within two months.
If they fail again, they will be held back, but no child will be expelled before completing elementary education.
The policy affects over 3,000 central government schools.
