Doctors who admit more emergency patients tend to discharge them quicker, study finds.
A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine reveals that doctors who frequently admit emergency department patients hospitalize them for shorter periods, often unnecessarily. The research, using VA health records from 2011 to 2019, shows that patients admitted by high-admitting physicians were discharged sooner and faced no reduced risk of mortality compared to those treated by low-admitting doctors. The study suggests that variations in admission rates are more influenced by physician decision-making than patient health.
