The Newberry Library found a rare 16th-century manuscript, the largest known use of maguey paper.
The Newberry Library in Chicago has discovered a rare 16th-century manuscript written on maguey paper, a material made from pounded agave plants.
Titled "A Sequence of Sermons for Sundays and Saints' Days," the manuscript was written between 1540 and 1563 by Bernardino de Sahagún.
With 49 sheets, it is the largest known example of maguey paper, a material so rare that only about 10 sheets are known to exist globally.
The technology for making this paper was lost after European arrival.
