CFPB sues major banks over Zelle fraud, alleging inadequate consumer protection since 2017.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has sued JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America, accusing them of failing to protect consumers from fraud on the Zelle payment platform. The CFPB alleges that the banks rushed to launch Zelle without proper fraud prevention measures and denied relief to consumers who reported being defrauded. The lawsuit also names Early Warning Services, the operator of Zelle, and seeks an unspecified amount of money to cover refunds, damages, and penalties. Since its launch in 2017, Zelle has processed over $481 billion in transactions and has over 143 million users. The banks have denied the allegations.
