Los Angeles Zoo hatches rare perentie lizards, among world's largest, in a first for the U.S.

The Los Angeles Zoo has successfully hatched its first perentie lizards, or Varanus giganteus, a rare achievement outside of Australia. Perentie lizards are among the world's largest, growing up to 8 feet long and weighing over 40 pounds. The LA Zoo is one of only three accredited institutions to reproduce the species. The baby lizards are being raised off-exhibit, while their father can be seen in the zoo's Australia section.
