British Columbia repeals public drug use law after concerns it increased overdose deaths.

The British Columbia government has repealed a law passed in November 2023 aiming to restrict drug use in public areas, after court challenges argued it would increase deaths among drug users. The court injunction halted the law, and the federal government allowed police to seize drugs in public spaces without the provincial law. Despite the repeal, possession of small amounts of drugs for personal use remains decriminalized in certain private settings. The province reported a 9% decrease in overdose deaths in the first 10 months of 2024 compared to the same period last year.
