New technology identifies and eliminates male chicks before hatching, improving animal welfare in egg industry.
The U.S. egg industry kills about 350 million male chicks annually as they cannot lay eggs.
However, new technology from German company Agri Advanced Technologies (AAT) can detect male embryos in fertilized eggs before they hatch and grind them up for other uses.
The machine, called Cheggy, uses a bright light and cameras to identify feather shading that determines sex.
Currently, it works only on brown eggs, but the company aims to develop a system for white eggs within five years.
This technology, which began operating in Iowa, is seen as a significant improvement in animal welfare.
