Former teacher cleared of sex abuse charges due to outdated law that didn't cover women.

Former Sydney teacher Helga Lam had her legal costs covered by taxpayers after charges of historical sex abuse against three male students were dismissed. The NSW Court of Criminal Appeal found the 1970s law only applied to men abusing boys, not women. A similar case in May cleared another female teacher, Gaye Grant, on the same grounds. The legislation, repealed in 1984, was specific to male homosexual conduct.
