UN report: Over 1,140 civilians, including women and children, arbitrarily arrested in South Sudan.

A joint UN report reveals that 1,140 civilians were arbitrarily arrested in South Sudan from January 2023 to June 2024, including 162 women and 87 children. Women and girls were often detained for refusing arranged marriages or seeking divorce. The UN calls for the release of those detained and for accountability. The South Sudanese government has pledged to investigate and address these violations.
