Alberta voters in Lethbridge-West elect new MLA in by-election, with low early turnout.
Residents in Lethbridge-West, Alberta, are voting to fill a vacant legislature seat after NDP MLA Shannon Phillips resigned in July. Early voting saw only 18% of the 37,000 eligible voters cast ballots, down from 28% in the 2023 general election. The race features three candidates: Rob Miyashiro from the NDP, John Middleton-Hope from the United Conservatives, and Layton Veverka from the Alberta Party. This by-election marks the first test of the NDP's appeal under new leader Naheed Nenshi, with the UCP currently holding 49 of the 87 seats in the legislature.
