Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics reported that Nigerians paid about N2.2 trillion in ransom over a 12-month period, with the North-West region recording the highest number of crime incidents at 14.4 million. The survey, covering May 2023 to April 2024, documented 51.9 million crime incidents nationally, with rural areas experiencing more crime than urban areas. Around 65% of kidnapping cases involved ransom payments, averaging N2.67 million per incident, and only 36.3% of home robbery victims reported crimes due to distrust in law enforcement.
