Australian firms plan a massive electric smelting furnace to produce low-emissions iron using renewable energy.
Australian companies BlueScope, BHP, and Rio Tinto plan to build the country's largest ironmaking electric smelting furnace in Kwinana, Western Australia. Known as the NeoSmelt project, it aims to produce iron from Pilbara iron ore using renewable energy, eliminating the need for coal and significantly reducing emissions. The Cook Labor Government is investing $75 million in the pilot facility, which could begin operations in 2028, potentially creating local jobs and positioning Western Australia as a leader in low-emissions iron ore processing.
