Study: Expanding needle exchange programs in prisons could prevent infections and save money.

A Canadian study shows that expanding needle exchange programs in federal prisons could prevent 15% of new hepatitis C cases and 8% of injection-related infections between 2025 and 2030. The program, which has been partially implemented in Canada, saves $2 for every dollar spent by reducing treatment costs for these infections. Researchers recommend expanding the program to more prisons to increase its health benefits and cost savings.
