NSW man becomes first to be charged under new coercive control laws, sentenced for abusing partner.
A 44-year-old man in Riverina, NSW, became the first person charged under new coercive control laws that took effect on July 1. He was sentenced to an 18-month intensive corrections order for stalking and intimidating his partner, destroying property worth up to $2000, and common assault. The laws aim to combat abusive behaviors meant to control or harm current or former partners. He was arrested on July 26 and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service.
