Mount Maunganui in New Zealand closes to repair a sacred touchstone damaged by vandals.

Mount Maunganui, or Mauao, in New Zealand will be temporarily closed to repair a vandalized pounamu touchstone, a sacred cultural item. The touchstone, unveiled in 2022 to celebrate the Māori New Year, was damaged recently. Tauranga Mayor Mahé Drysdale called the act "despicable," and police have been informed. This is the second incident of vandalism on the mountain; signs were defaced in May and August last year.
