Census data shows fewer grandparents caring for grandchildren, linked to economic factors and fewer opioid deaths.

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows a drop in grandparents living with and caring for grandchildren, from 7.2 million to 6.8 million, likely due to fewer opioid deaths, a decline in incarcerated women, and a stronger economy. The survey also noted a decrease in preschool enrollment for young children due to pandemic-related school closures. Median home values increased by 21.7%.
