Australian authorities crack down on foreign drivers exploiting loopholes to avoid traffic penalties.

The New South Wales Government and the Australian Border Force are working together to address foreign drivers exploiting a loophole to avoid demerit points for traffic violations. Over 125,000 penalties with 256,000 demerit points have been issued to 'international drivers' since May 2022. The Demerit Point Integrity Taskforce, including Transport for NSW, NSW Police, and Revenue NSW, is now supported by the Border Force to verify the presence of nominated drivers in Australia. Starting March 2025, long-term temporary visa holders arriving before July 2023 will need a local driver's license. The French Consulate in Sydney will also implement stricter verification for French license holders.
