Alberta Premier considers using clause to override rights for trans youth health care ban.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is willing to use the notwithstanding clause to protect her government's restrictions on transgender health care, which ban gender-affirming treatments for those under 16. The clause allows overriding certain Charter rights. Two LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and five families are challenging the ban in court, arguing it violates charter rights to security, freedom from cruel treatment, and equality.
