Luzerne County considers hiring armed guards and offering stipends to address deputy shortages.

Luzerne County, facing a deputy shortage, is considering hiring outside armed security guards for four sites and offering one-time stipends to current deputies to prevent further departures. The county has 40 deputy positions, including 10 part-time, but several are vacant. Sheriff Brian Szumski sees the security guard services as a temporary solution until the vacancies are filled. The stipend program, which would cost $170,000, is meant to retain current deputies.
