FBI warns of rising doxxing and swatting threats; Illinois enacts law to sue attackers.

The FBI has warned of a rise in doxxing, which targets vulnerable groups like LGBTQ+ youth and racial minorities by revealing their personal information online without consent. Swatting, another form of harassment, involves false emergency calls to send police to a victim's home. In response, Illinois has enacted the Civil Liability for Doxxing Act, allowing victims to sue attackers starting January 1, 2024, if the doxxing causes harm such as emotional distress or economic loss.
