38-year-old Newcastle horse trainer Sam Kavanagh passed away on December 14 after battling throat cancer. He trained his first winner in 2012 and won seven stakes races, including the Scone Cup in 2015. Despite his diagnosis in July, he managed his stable while undergoing chemotherapy. Kavanagh was disqualified from racing in 2015 for cobalt and caffeine charges but regained his license in late 2020. The Newcastle Jockey Club plans to hold a memorial event in his honor.
