Hong Kong man pleads guilty to smuggling 40 protected eastern box turtles from the U.S. to China.

A 54-year-old Hong Kong man, Sai Keung Tin, pleaded guilty in a Los Angeles federal court to trafficking 40 protected eastern box turtles from the US to China. Wildlife inspectors intercepted packages containing the turtles, which were falsely labeled as almonds and chocolate cookies. Tin faces up to 10 years in federal prison for each of the four charges. The eastern box turtles are protected under international law due to their endangered status.
