Former South Carolina Senator Kay Patterson, a civil rights advocate, has died at 93.

Former South Carolina Senator Kay Patterson, who rose from being a janitor at the segregated Statehouse to serving over 30 years in the state legislature, has died at 93. Patterson was a strong advocate for civil rights, public education, and helping the poor. He was also the first Black person to serve on the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees since Reconstruction and played a key role in removing the Confederate flag from the Statehouse.
