Minnesota approves CO2 pipeline project, part of a massive $9B effort to capture ethanol emissions.
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission has approved a permit for Summit Carbon Solutions to build a 28-mile CO2 pipeline, part of a larger $9 billion, 2,500-mile project capturing CO2 from 57 ethanol plants across five states for underground storage in North Dakota. Construction in Minnesota, targeting the Green Plains ethanol plant in Fergus Falls, is set to begin in 2026, pending permits and construction in other states. The PUC added conditions including providing CO2 monitors for nearby residents and compensating for crop damage. Summit has faced legal threats against opponents over false statements claims.
