Meta complied with a Canadian order to reveal how it blocks news, under pressure from new media laws.

Meta has complied with a Canadian CRTC order to disclose how it blocks news content on Facebook and Instagram in response to Canada's Online News Act, which requires tech platforms to pay media outlets for their content. Initially resisting the order, Meta's Oct. 17 letter details its methods of identifying news outlets but does not address user workarounds like sharing screenshots. The Liberal government insists Meta could still be subject to the legislation.
