Washington State University has named its new apple variety "Sunflare," a cross between Honeycrisp and Cripps Pink apples.
The name was selected from over 15,000 public submissions.
Sunflare apples, known for their bright pink and yellow skin and sweet-tart flavor, are expected to be available in stores by 2029.
The apple breeding process began in 1998, and WSU plans to exclusively grow the variety in Washington state orchards.
