UK regulator Ofgem plans to mandate energy tariffs without standing charges to ease household debt.

The UK energy regulator, Ofgem, plans to require energy firms to offer tariffs without standing charges to help address rising household energy debt. Standing charges, currently averaging £338 per year, disproportionately affect lower energy users. Consumer expert Martin Lewis supports this move but warns it could raise bills for high energy users, such as disabled individuals. Ofgem also plans to provide better support for customers in debt, including a "debt guarantee."
