Lion's mane jellyfish have returned to Tauranga Harbour after a decade-long absence, possibly due to reduced boat traffic and construction during the Covid-19 lockdown, which decreased sediment and allowed eelgrass to thrive. While their tentacles can cause a burning sensation, they pose a greater risk to boat engines by clogging water intakes. Other species like moon jellyfish are also thriving.
