WHO reports over 846 million people globally have genital herpes, calling for new treatments.

Over 1 in 5 adults globally, or around 846 million people aged 15 to 49, have a genital herpes infection, according to recent WHO estimates. The condition, caused by the herpes simplex virus, can lead to painful sores and blisters, though many infections show no symptoms. Genital herpes is incurable, with HSV-2 being more likely to cause recurring outbreaks and increase the risk of HIV by three-fold. The WHO calls for the development of new treatments and vaccines to control the spread of the infection and reduce its health impacts.
