Former North Charleston Police officer Louis Marion Smoak, 44, has been indicted for misconduct in office after allegedly using excessive force on a handcuffed individual in a Walmart parking lot on November 25, 2023. The incident involved Smoak punching the person in the chest, forcefully removing them from a patrol vehicle, and slamming their head against the vehicle and pavement. Smoak resigned on January 24, and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigated the case.
