Birmingham City Council settles major equal pay claims for 6,000 workers, backed by government funds.

Birmingham City Council has reached a landmark agreement with unions GMB and Unison to settle equal pay claims for about 6,000 predominantly female workers. The payouts, expected to be four times higher than previous offers, are set for mid-2025 and fall within a financial support package from the government. The council had declared itself effectively bankrupt last year due to an estimated £760 million equal pay liability. Though the deal marks progress, residents still face a 10% tax hike and service cuts.
