Supreme Court of India rules reservations must be based on socio-economic status, not religion.

The Supreme Court of India has stated that reservations cannot be based on religion while hearing a plea from the West Bengal government challenging a Calcutta High Court ruling. The High Court decision invalidated the OBC status of 77 communities, mostly Muslim, since 2010. The Supreme Court emphasized reservations must be based on socio-economic status, not religion, and will hear further arguments in January.
