South Korean battery makers lose ground to Chinese rivals in global EV battery market.
South Korean EV battery makers LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI saw their combined global market share drop by 3.5 percentage points in the first 10 months of 2024, falling behind Chinese rivals CATL and BYD. Chinese companies now hold 53.6% of the market, focusing on cheaper, more durable prismatic cells. In response, South Korean firms are developing prismatic and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries to stay competitive.
