Man accidentally shot dead by boy mistaking him for a possum during an illegal hunting trip.

John Atkins, a 44-year-old from Tolaga Bay, was accidentally shot and killed by a boy during a hunting trip on August 24, 2024. The boy, mistaking Atkins for a possum, fired a .22 rifle at him. Atkins died later in the hospital. Karl Eric Peters, who was hunting without a valid license and using thermal imaging, was jailed for manslaughter and other charges after police found unlicensed firearms and cannabis at his home.
