Two South African universities returned over R800 million in unspent NSFAS funds due to lacking controls.

Two South African universities, Wits and UFS, have returned over R800 million in unspent NSFAS funds to the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). The SIU found that NSFAS lacked controls to reconcile funds disbursed with the list of registered students, leading to unallocated funds. Since the investigation began in 2022, the SIU has recovered about R1.7 billion from various institutions. NSFAS has since hired a service provider to improve reconciliation processes.
