Cherokee Nation extends tribal vehicle tag agreement with Oklahoma, boosting public services funding.

The Cherokee Nation Council has approved a 10-year extension of its motor vehicle tag compact with Oklahoma, effective January 1, 2025. This agreement allows Cherokee citizens, both on and off the reservation, to continue using tribal vehicle tags. The compact, in place for over two decades, has generated $258 million for public services since 2002. Under the new deal, the Cherokee Nation will pay $2 million over three years to clear outstanding tolls and will increase its remittance rate to the state from 35% to 40%.
