AI analysis of CT scans reveals early signs of heart disease, detected in 29% of patients.

Researchers from NYU Langone Health have discovered that AI analysis of CT scans, originally taken to detect tumors or bleeding, can also reveal calcium buildup in arteries, a sign of worsening cardiovascular disease. This study, presented at the Radiological Society of North America, used AI to measure aortic calcium levels in abdominal scans, predicting heart attack risks. The technique, known as "opportunistic screening," found early signs of arterial calcium buildup in 29% of participants previously thought to have none.
