A stranded Minke whale was euthanized on Sunset Beach, New Jersey, due to its poor health condition.
A Minke whale was found stranded and in poor health on Sunset Beach in Cape May Point, New Jersey, on December 3, 2024. Weighing in at 18 feet, the whale was euthanized due to its low chance of survival, as stranding can cause severe internal damage. Officials from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center noted the whale was lethargic and showed signs of lung congestion. A necropsy is scheduled to determine the cause of the stranding. This is the second Minke whale stranding reported in New Jersey this year.
