India's Chief Justice recuses himself from hearing petitions against a new law altering election commission appointments.
India's Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has recused himself from hearing petitions challenging a new law that excludes the Chief Justice from the panel responsible for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners.
The petitioners argue the law, which replaces the Chief Justice with a Cabinet Minister, violates the Constitution and undermines the independence of the Election Commission.
The cases will be heard by another bench in January 2025.
