India's Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna has recused himself from hearing petitions challenging a new law that excludes the Chief Justice from the panel responsible for appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners. The petitioners argue the law, which replaces the Chief Justice with a Cabinet Minister, violates the Constitution and undermines the independence of the Election Commission.
