Recruited under the codename "Alyssa," Zarubina is accused of lying to FBI agents about her connections with Russian intelligence and her efforts to build a network of U.S. contacts, including journalists and military personnel. Zarubina, who denies being part of Russian intelligence beyond knowing former classmates, was released on $25,000 bail with restrictions.
