Japan detects a Russian submarine near its southwestern islands, raising military tensions in the area.

Japan dispatched a surveillance plane and navy ship after spotting a Russian Kilo-class submarine 50 kilometers south of Yonaguni Island, its westernmost territory, near Taiwan. This marks the first sighting of a Russian submarine in these waters. The submarine was moving northeast between Yonaguni and Iriomote Islands and was accompanied by a Russian naval ship. Japan's Self-Defense Forces deployed additional assets for reconnaissance, ensuring no breach of territorial waters. This incident heightens Japan's concerns over increasing military activities by China and Russia in the region.
