UK rivers show rising neonicotinoid levels, despite promises to ban these bee-harming pesticides.

Neonicotinoid pesticides, which are banned in Europe due to their toxicity to bees, have been detected in 85% of English rivers, up from 79% in 2020-2022. The Rivers Trust and Wildlife and Countryside Link's analysis shows high detection rates in areas with sugar beet farming. Despite promising to ban these pesticides during the election, the UK government is considering allowing their use on sugar beet crops. Environmental groups are calling for stricter bans and increased monitoring of chemicals in rivers.
