Study finds chronic fungal lung infection kills one-third of those with pre-existing lung diseases.

Researchers from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences found that chronic pulmonary aspergillosis (CPA), a fungal infection causing lung scarring, can be fatal for about one-third of people with pre-existing lung diseases. The infection, caused by Aspergillus spores, leads to severe symptoms and can be misdiagnosed as tuberculosis. The study, published in Lancet Infectious Diseases, highlights the need for antifungal treatment and surgery to improve outcomes, especially for older patients and those with specific lung conditions.
