Melbourne's long-delayed West Gate Tunnel, now costing $10.2 billion, sees first cars drive through it.

The West Gate Tunnel in Melbourne, Australia, has hit a major milestone as the first cars drive through its four-kilometer underground route. Initially budgeted at $5.5 billion for 2023 completion, the project now costs $10.2 billion and is set to open late 2025. It aims to reduce daily truck traffic by 9,000 and cut commute times by up to 20 minutes. Before opening, the tunnel needs 1.1 million meters of electrical cables and asphalt installation.
